HiP HOP HiGH COMES TO LOS ANGELES
Hawthorne, CA, August 31, 2007 --(PR.com)-- High School for Recording Arts (HSRA), a Minnesota-founded charter school, will open its Los Angeles campus in Hawthorne on September 6, 2007. Dr. Jennifer Murphy, Program Director for Centinela Media Arts Academy in Hawthorne, announced today that HSRA/Studio 4 will blend their curriculum, faculty and unique recording arts program with the Centinela Media Arts Academy, which is a part of the Centinela Valley Union School District, to form the High School for Recording Arts, Los Angeles.
Why is this so significant, you ask? Well, in the words of HSRA’s founder, David “T.C.” Ellis, “High School For Recording Arts is the first school in the U.S. to incorporate pop-culture –specifically hip-hop -- into its curriculum. We use experiential learning to connect core subjects like English, science, social studies and math, by relating them to the music business. With the benefit of the small class format, students of HSRA LA will get individualized instruction, while they gain mastery in all areas of the music business, including engineering and production, graphic design, copy writing, marketing, artistic performance, contract negotiation, manufacturing, publishing, licensing, and more.”
The “new” school will house Studio 4, the school’s in-house state-of-the-art 48-track recording studio, a professional music production faculty to train and mentor students, a pre-production area, rehearsal space and performance stage. Phil Winden, studio director for Studio 4, recently relocated to California from Minnesota to jump start this exciting program. According to Phil, “It is our educational philosophy that all students, irrespective of their economic or social background, have access to state of the art equipment to learn from that will best prepare them for an increasingly competitive global work environment.” HSRA L.A. will serve as headquarters for the west coast division of the student-operated record label, Another Level Records, which also produces The Fo-Show, a 30-minute radio show that currently airs weekly on top rated Twin Cities radio station, B-96 FM. Like their MN counterpart, the students at HSRA L.A. can look forward to producing their own radio show; guest lectures from music industry execs and celebrities; trips abroad and exciting fund-raising and marketing projects.
While the Hip-Hop community has been confronting the controversy concerning its part in proliferating some negative words and imagery in music and videos, High School for Recording Arts Los Angeles is poised to offer an alternative message. “Our students are super talented and committed to the production of high quality, relevant music minus profanity and misogyny. Our values are based around what the “4” in Studio 4 stands for and that’s Family, Community, Education and Respect,” said HSRA/Studio 4 Director of Development Tony Simmons.
HSRA’s flagship school located in St. Paul, Minnesota was founded 10 years ago by former Warner Bros. /Paisley Park recording artist, David “T.C.” Ellis. In 1998, Ellis took several young men who had dropped out of school and were hanging out at his studio and who wanted to record their music and learn more about the recording industry and opened the High School for Recording Arts to 9-12 grade at-risk teens.
“As a troubled teen in the Twin Cities, it was the love and intervention from my family and other adults that saved me from a life of crime.” Ellis is truly on his God mission, he says. “I had to give these kids another chance like I was given… I knew I could get through to them if I could demonstrate that education and hard work would be imperative in achieving their music industry aspirations. The bonus is that these kids are so talented! I know I have found my life’s work, and I feel truly blessed”.
“Our goal for HSRA, L.A. is to offer a high quality educational option to the young people of this community, bring local and national awareness to the program and aggressively pursue funding for our educational trips, teachers’ salaries, facility upgrades, school supplies, text books, CD projects, etc.”, says Dr. Murphy. “We will need the support of L.A.’s business and private sectors, local government agencies and officials. For the authenticity of the school, we want to develop a reciprocal relationship with the entertainment community.”
HSRA L.A. will host a Press Conference on September 6, 2007 at 2pm on the school’s campus at 11415 Chadron Avenue, Hawthorne, CA 90250. “We’re inviting the media, city officials and local businesses to attend,” according to Dr. Murphy. Dr. Murphy also confirmed that the mayor’s office and various local businesses will be in attendance.
What’s on the Horizon for Hip-Hop High?
“We have been awarded a grant from Black Alliance for Education Options (BAEO)/ Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Small Schools Project and the New York City Center for Charter School Excellence to replicate HSRA in New York City, which is scheduled for a 2009 opening. Our long term goal is to replicate HSRA schools worldwide,” according to Director of Development Tony Simmons. HSRA currently has 6 CD projects, available at http://www.anotherlevelrecords.com
HSRA Facts: • Over 70% of students who have attended HSRA have graduated from its program. • HSRA is a grant recipient of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, • HSRA is one of 22 secondary schools across the US designated as a Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) Mentor High School. • HSRA is accredited by the North Central Accreditation Association •Founder David Ellis was honored as an Oxford University Roundtable Fellow for his work with HSRA/Studio 4 and in 2005 was invited to present his work before leading educators from around the world. •HSRA has been around the world to promote the success of the program. HSRA students are goodwill ambassadors for Hip-Hop High, having traveled to Accra, Ghana and Guatemala City, as well as throughout the United States.

The star power and performing prowess that Lopez and Anthony will bring to the stage is unequaled. During the tour, Lopez and Anthony will perform separate sets of their own material and will perform together as well. Each set will include songs in English and Spanish.

COHEED AND CAMBRIA with special guests Clutch and The Fall of TroyCoheed and Cambria will embark on an extensive North American fall headline tour. Their L.A. performance will take place at The Wiltern on Sunday, November 11th with rock veterans Clutch and The Fall of Troy supporting. Tickets go on sale Friday, September 7th at 10 AM. The Coheed and Cambria fall tour will be in support of the band's new album, "No World for Tomorrow," scheduled to be released on Tuesday, October 23. Coheed and Cambria (Claudio Sanchez – vocals, guitar; Travis Stever – guitar; Michael Todd – bass; Chris Pennie – drums) dedicated No World For Tomorrow, to the memory of Antonia Cristiano, Claudio Sanchez' aunt, whose life was claimed last year by Alzheimer's. Cristiano -- a psychologist who played an essential role in the band's early career, counseled the group during deep growing pains and kept Coheed and Cambria from breaking up in 2002 -- was the inspiration "Justice in Murder," a key song on the new record. No World For Tomorrow marks the apex and final chapter of "The Amory Wars," the conceptual, apocalyptic storyline which runs through the band's previous albums -- The Second Stage Turbine Blade (2002), In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (2003) and Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (2005) – and chronicles the the trials and tribulations of main characters Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon and their children as they fight to save civilization. WEEN
Ween was formed during 8th grade typing class in 1984 in New Hope, PA by Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo (Gene and Dean Ween). They have released eight studio albums to date and are scheduled to release La Cucarcha on October 23rd. It was produced by long-time collaborator Andrew Weiss, and recorded, according to Dean, “in a moldy 200 year-old farmhouse in our hometown of New Hope, PA.” Ween will embark on their most extensive tour in years in support of La Cucaracha and will be hitting The Wiltern on November 8th. Tickets go on sale Friday, September 7th at 10 AM. From the mold Ween has crafted its most ambitious release since the 1994 classic Chocolate and Cheese. The album’s first single “Your Party” features the smooth sounds of saxophonist David Sanborn. Rolling Stone observed that Ween’s voracious musical appetite is “both anachronistic and cunningly contemporary,” and that’s never been truer than on La Cucaracha. Dean also says of the new record, "I will say that we are super happy with La Cucaracha, we consider it to be a party record, unlike our last record which was more of a Jonestown type party vibe. This record is a lot more fun because that’s where we’re at right now." Critics have hailed Ween both musically and as a live band. Popmatters said, "Ween are more in tune with the fundamental nature of rock and roll than anyone currently making music. They’re doggedly passionate, gloriously theatrical, brilliantly subversive, and maybe a little bit evil. “While The New York Times proclaimed, “The festival lineup includes … and Ween, who show up at all these things and blow everybody away.”

 REGiNA SPEKTOR WiTH SPECiAL GUESTS
A veteran of New York's anti-folk scene, Regina Spektor makes quirky, highly eclectic, but always personal music. Born in Russia, Spektor listened to her father's bootleg tapes of Western pop and rock at a young age and also learned to play piano. At the age of nine, she and her family moved from Russia to the Bronx. While growing up in America, Spektor continued to practice piano anywhere she could, including at her synagogue, until her family got a piano of their own. Spektor further developed her classical piano training by completing the four-year studio composition program at the SUNY Purchase Music Conservatory and graduated with honors in 2001. After her studies, she gradually achieved recognition through performances in the anti-folk scene in New York City's East Village.
Spektor possesses a broad vocal range and uses it to its full extent. She also explores a variety of different and somewhat unorthodox vocal techniques, such as verses composed entirely of buzzing noises made with the lips, beatbox-style flourishes in the middle of ballads or the use of a drum stick to tap rhythms on the body of the piano or chair. Spektor is an enormously idiosyncratic composer and lyricist, combining eclectic and evocative melodies with intricately structured character studies that owe more to Chekhov and Gogol than to most modern songwriters. In 2006, Spektor embarked on a headlining tour of the United States and Europe, selling out numerous clubs and theaters while playing on her trademark bright red Baldwin baby grand piano. Rolling Stone said of her performance at NYC's Town Hall last year, "Throughout, she was full of smiles and giggles, putting on one of the most intensely joyful rock shows we’ve seen all year."
Specktor's latest album, Begin To Hope features the single, "Fidelity" that hit #3 on the Billbard singles chart, while the album hit Top 20 on their album chart. The album has been certified gold and sales continue to climb with the success of her latest hit single, "Better."

LAUSD ANNOUNCES BENEFiT CONCERT TO REBUiLD GARFiELD HiGH SCHOOL AUDiTORiUM
Los Angeles --- Officials at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) announced today that a benefit concert to rebuild the Garfield High School auditorium will be held at the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City on October 14. Proceeds from ticket sales will help fund the rebuilding of the historic Garfield auditorium that was destroyed by fire in May. Performers at the Garfield Benefit Concert include the legendary Eastside rock group Los Lobos, Tierra, Little Joe y La Familia, Little Willie G and El Chicano. The event is organized by LAUSD, the Garfield Alumni Foundation and community members. Tickets are now on sale at the Gibson Amphitheater box office and Ticketmaster. "I greatly appreciate our entire East Los Angeles community coming together to help rebuild Garfield's auditorium," said School Board Member Yolie Flores Aguilar, who represents the area. "Their support represents the determination of our community to preserve the beauty of our schools and all of our commitment to our students." "When the fire occurred, we received numerous calls from members of the community who wanted to contribute to Garfield auditorium rebuilding efforts," said LAUSD Superintendent David L. Brewer III. "I applaud the performers and organizers who have given freely of their time and talent to support this important cause." "Garfield high School represents the very essence of what East Los Angeles is all about. It is the soul of the community and holds a very special place in the hearts of the many bands that originated in this community," said members of Los Lobos. " As musicians who draw inspiration from East Los Angeles, we are happy to be a part of the re-building effort. This benefit concert will serve as a celebration of the spirit and the soul of East Los Angeles." Built in 1924, the Garfield High School Auditorium has been the site of countless awards ceremonies, plays and meetings at the iconic East Los Angeles High School. The May 2007 fire destroyed the auditorium and rendered it unusable for thousands of Garfield students and families. LAUSD is leading the reconstruction of the historic auditorium, which will occur in two phases. In the first phase, the original 1924 blueprints and subsequent renovations in the 1950's analyzed and a plan developed to involve the community in the rebuilding process. The District has also engaged an architectural historian who will assist with the process of restoring features of the original building. LAUSD has established the "Fund to Rebuild Garfield Auditorium." Donations can be made at any Bank of America branch. For more information on how to make a contribution, contact the LAUSD Office of Communications at 213-241-6766. DROPKiCK MURPHYS
Dropkick Murphys formed in 1996 in Boston, MA. The band was originally just a bunch of friends looking to play music for fun. Their sound is a blend of the musical influences they grew up with (punk rock, Irish folk, rock and hardcore) into one loud, raucous and chaotic mix that is their signature sound. The goal of this seven member band is to play music that creates an all for one, one for all environment where everyone is encouraged to participate, sing along, and hopefully have a good time. Dropkick Murphys also believe in working class solidarity, friendship, loyalty and self- improvement as a means to bettering society which is a prevalent theme in their songs. The band is scheduled to release their sixth album, The Meanest of Times on September 18th. The Boston Globe raved about Dropkick Murphys' St. Patrick's Day 2007 show in their hometown by saying, "Undoubtedly, the success of the annual residency owes no small debt to the Murphys being a Celtic-themed band in Boston. But the Avalon show was a reminder that they earned their must-see status by figuring out what they do well and working hard to do it better than anybody else." BRYAN ADAMS WITH SPECiAL GUEST GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS
With his raspy vocals and blue-collar friendly songs, Canadian icon Bryan Adams found himself a niche in rock and roll that has lasted for over 20 years. It was his third album, Cuts Like a Knife that put Adams on the map. Released in 1983, the first single "Straight from the Heart,” hit the Top 10. The album also reached Top Ten, selling platinum and spawning further Top 40 hits with the title song and "This Time.“
Adams' fourth album Reckless featured the single "Run to You", which reached the Top Ten. It was followed by five Top 20 singles from the album: "Somebody,” "Heaven" (which hit #1), "Summer of '69" (Top Ten), "One Night Love Affair" and a duet with Tina Turner, "It's Only Love ." Reckless reached #1 in the U.S. and sold over five million copies. Adams also earned his first two Grammy nominations, "Best Male Rock Performance" for the album and "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group" for "It's Only Love ." All of Brian's hits can be found on Anthology, an album that spans Adams' entire career from the 1980’s to the present day, Adams continues to tour regularly and as a noted social activist, participates in concerts and other activities to help raise money and/or awareness for a variety of different causes. A blues-rock guitarist who draws his inspiration from Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor and Chuck Berry, George Thorogood became a popular favorite in the early '80s through repeated exposure on FM radio and the arena rock circuit. Thorogood released his debut album titled Better Than the Rest in 1974. In 1976, he recorded his second album, George Thorogood & The Destroyers (GT & D) with his band, The Destroyers and issued the album in 1977. Move It On Over followed in 1978 which included the hit of the same name. GT & D's music is always loud, simple, and direct and this formulaic approach helped them gain a large audience and many gold records through the years. The band’s biggest hit, "Bad to the Bone" been used frequently on television and the big screen. Their most recent effort, The Hard Stuff was released last year. George says he’s looking forward to hitting the road with Bryan Adams. The two first met in 1985 and immediately hit it off. They performed together at a jam session at Nashville’s Peabody Hotel and have been trying to tour together ever since. Says Thorogood,“We got along immediately and it’s great that we’re finally able to get out and do some shows together.” OCTOBER 4TH

AVENGED SEVENFOLDThe members of Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) were still in high school when they formed in 1999 in Huntington Beach, CA. It didn’t take long for M. The band released their major label debut, City of Evil in 2005. Fueled by their Top Ten single, "Bat Country,” City of Evil hit #30 on Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart. With heavy video exposure on MTV, A7X won the "Best New Artist" Award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. AS i LAY DYiNG with special guests: All That Remains Haste the Day Through the Eyes of the Dead
As I Lay Dying (AILD) is a California metal-hardcore crossover band from San Diego. The group originally formed as a trio in 2001 but has evolved into a quintet consisting of Tim Lambesis (vocals), Jordan Mancino (drums), Nick Hipa (guitar), Phillip Sgrosso(guitar) and Josh Gilbert (bass). The members of AILD are the kind of musicians that refuse to be measured solely by their most recent accomplishments. The new album, An Ocean Between Us, is evidence of this fact, proving once again that these guys are not afraid to push the limits of their sound and always keep things moving. The music grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until the album’s finish. With a fan base that continues to grow exponentially, AILD plan to focus on what they know best, hitting the road. Their high-profile, marathon tour cycle found the band as one of the featured attractions on the Ozzfest 2005 side stage, then as part of the second annual Taste Of Chaos trek in winter 2006 along with Deftones and Thrice. AILD touring schedule culminated in the headlining slot on the 2006 Sounds Of The Underground tour where they performed in front of 3000-5000 people per night. NOVEMBER 28TH
